To round up some of the best pieces from both heritage brands and exciting startups, we asked six players and coaches to share their favorites. As Chris Olberding, president of Gitman Vintage and an avid tennis player, says, “fashion has always been inexorably linked to tennis.” From Stan Smith’s crisp polo shirts and white sneakers to Serena Williams’s one-leg catsuit, clothing has long been a way for tennis players to show off their personality.Įven if a Grand Slam isn’t in your future, you still have plenty of options for nice-looking tennis gear. Of course, most tennis clubs have relaxed their rules since the days when you could only wear white - whites symbolized the sport’s roots as a leisure pursuit of the upper class (who could afford all that dry-cleaning) - but the sport has maintained some of its stylish legacy. Ivan Krcelic, a former professional player who is currently the head director at Tennis Prime in Fort Lee, New Jersey, explains that “tennis was the sport of kings and queens,” so there’s more of an emphasis on style and formality on the court than you’d expect at the gym. So if you’re one of the many new players who picked up a racket and new pair of tennis shoes recently (or just want to look like one), you might be wondering what you should be wearing - especially now, when you might be heading out to brunch or drinks afterward and want to look good, too.Īs with any other sport or workout, you’re going to want your gear to be moisture-wicking, breathable, and easy to move around in, but tennis attire also has its own functional and sartorial standards. Tennis is a perfectly suited pastime for a pandemic, after all: You’re outside and physically separated from your opponent. The trend likely has something to do with the huge surge of interest in the sport during quarantine. Since then, I've worn leggings in the weight room, to HIIT workouts at boutique group fitness classes, and everywhere else I damn well please.Tennis-inspired fashion, from pleated skirts to retro tube socks, seems to be everywhere these days. One day I realized that I cared more about how much freer my hips would feel without the extra layer, and I ditched the shorts for good. The final piece of the puzzle came when I started Muay Thai training, which requires lots of high kicks and movement. Squats and other lower body exercises are better in leggings too, since you can really check out the biomechanics of the movement without being impeded. Masculinity, especially for a Midwestern teenage boy, can be very fragile.īut as I worked my way up the sports ladder I realized how much more comfortable-and more importantly, functional-leggings are on their own, especially for runners looking to cut down on drag. My cool high school indoor track coach showed up to a winter session in nothing but a pair of ColdGear tights, and I was weirded out for longer than I should've been. The first time I saw a guy wearing only leggings in public, I thought there was something deviant happening. I never thought I'd be okay with exposing so much in public myself, but now, I'm a convert. Most of the responses from men in the chat referenced how exposed they feel without the buffer a pair of shorts provides between their privates and the world, not anything about the physical comfort or functionality of the setup. "I'm pro-shorts over tights, mostly because I otherwise feel kind of naked without them," explained Digital Director Mike Darling. Instagram by absurdity and bizarre behavior were what made him incredibly notorious he was known for walking backwards in Athens, holding a lantern in broad daylight, insisted that he was in search for an “honest man.” Diogenes disregarded conventionality completely, he masturbated, defecated, urinated, and even participated in intercourse, in public. He rejected materialism and egotism and wandered the Greek Empire for decades, carrying nothing but a knapsack, a staff, and the cloak around his shoulders. Observing the mouse taught him that he too could adapt himself to fit into any circumstance, this lesson became the origin of his famous askēsis, or intense self-discipline.ĭiogenes chose to live self-sufficiently and close to nature. His house truly gave a new meaning to the phrase “humble abode.”Įarly on in his life, he realized that he had no need for conventional shelter or other “dainties” after he witnessed a mouse adapt to different living situations with ease. For him “home sweet home” was a ceramic tub or pithos. In order to follow his own philosophy, Diogenes chose to be homeless, at least in the traditional sense. A Search For An Honest ManĪlthough originally from Sinope, the majority of Diogenes history has been recorded in Athens. Diogenes quickly took to these lessons and applied them into his own ideology. Instagram by one point in his life, his father, who was a minter of coins in the city, was accused of defacing currency and sentenced to exile for which Diogenes followed his father to Athens.ĭiogenes began his career as a student of a similarly wacky individual, the philosopher Antisthenes (445-365 BCE) who was a former student of Socrates, and it has been alleged that Plato referred to him as “A Socrates gone mad.”īorn into a wealthy family, Antisthenes’ philosophy was influenced by the contradictions and injustices he observed within society. “Diogenes” by: Jean-Léon Gérôme, 19 th century. He is, nonetheless, one of the most ridiculous figures in history.Īrchival records on the philosopher are few or, if not, completely nonexistent yet his philosophical ideals were so profound that they single handedly cemented him in the history books.ĭiogenes was unique among this fellow Grecian philosophers. “It is the privilege of the gods to want nothing, and of godlike men to want little.” -Diogenes of Sinopeĭiogenes of Sinope (404-323 BCE) is a lesser-known Greek philosopher compared to the likes of Aristotle and Plato. To put it simply he was a woke, anarchist hobo-philosopher which may just be, the best kind of philosopher. He rejected social norms, politics, and luxury but instead, promoted multicultural appreciation and communal anarchy. Diogenes of Sinope was the embodiment of his teacher’s cynical way of life. It's called Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy. Then Speaker Nancy Pelosi in an act, in which he says in his new book, sort of was a lifeline to him and recruited him to be the impeachment manager on the second impeachment at a moment in which he had been through two profound traumas, a personal trauma and a kind of collective national trauma that he also had experienced with his family, with his beloved daughter and son-in-law.Īnd he has a new memoir out about those twin traumas. He was still in shock and mourning and grieving his son's death when he was at the Capitol with one of his daughters and his son-in-law January 6th wen the January 6th attack happened. He's spoken very eloquently about Tommy's loss, the devastation of it. Congressman Raskin also shortly before January 6th suffered an unthinkable, unfathomable personal tragedy which was the death by suicide of his adult son, Tommy. But Congressman Raskin's someone who I've always looked at as a really remarkable public servant at least in the capacity that I've known him, and a really interesting guy. And they really run the gamut in the sort of depth of their thoughtfulness, (LAUGH) the life experiences they've had, the politics. And you learn a lot from different politicians. And, you know, I meet a lot of politicians. The two of were both law professors before they sort of entered public life.Īnd Jamie Raskin's just a really fascinating guy. His wife, Sarah Bloom Raskin, worked at the Treasury Department. I sort of knew of Jamie Raskin even before he was a member of Congress, when he was a state legislator. He drafted the articles of impeachment along with others who were part of that effort. He was the lead impeachment manager for the second impeachment of Donald Trump, the impeachment for leading and inciting the insurrection. He represents Maryland's 9th Congressional District in the U.S. One of the sort of clearest voices on the dangers of what happened January 6th, and more broadly one of the voices in politics I find to best combine deep knowledge with human empathy and a historical sensibility is Congressman Jamie Raskin. There's an accelerating investigation of course from the select committee, a lot of meditations on the meaning of that day, which is as profoundly and proximate a threat to American democracy and the way that we conceive of it in the modern era as anything that I have experienced certainly in my lifetime. You have probably seen a lot of the January 6th one-year anniversary coverage in lots of places on our program All In With Chris Hayes which is weekends on MSNBC, across all kinds of media platforms. And we can have a renewal of our country.Ĭhris Hayes: Hello, and welcome to Why Is This Happening we me, your host, Chris Hayes. Have you ever given a third-party app or website permission to access your online accounts, such as your social media accounts or your office software accounts? For example, have you clicked “OK” when playing a new game on Facebook without reading the terms and conditions, or have you tweeted from an app that’s not Twitter? Check which apps have permission to access your social media accounts □ You should choose one that fits your needs □ There isn’t something like the perfect camera, so it’s a bigger topic. There’s not much to say about the camera, just use the one you have □ If you want to buy one for timelapse, I’ll probably disappoint you because I won’t cover that subject here. You’ll need basically three things to do your first timelapse: This article should teach you the basic knowledge for a timelapse photographer, although I won’t talk about other gear, you can easily translate this technique for any of your devices. So there won’t be smartphones or GoPro, but DSLR/DSLM type cameras □ Of course, you can use any camera to make a timelapse video. I’ll be talking about gear, that you should use for this job. This blog is addressed to those, who want to be professional. There are a lot of timelapse tutorials, that are about using your smartphone or the easiest software available. If you want to increase the level of your work (or just start at the higher level), check out my in-depth tutorial about Motion blur in Timelapse. I won’t get into details here, however, it’s an important matter to make your timelapses look really good. But if you want to do that ‘for real’, you’ll start shooting RAW some day (I highly recommend that) □ I use JPGs straight from camera only for things like a BTS timelapse that goes just to facebook. Probably some of you will shoot JPG, not RAW. And basically that’s why I am still using my old Canon 550D □ The video from that camera is not great, especially compared to GH4, but 18MPix stills are good for timelapses. For me there are three main things here:įirst two are things that lead to one advantage: better quality. Now let’s jump to the advantages of timelapse photography. We are here to learn how to make good timelapses, not just any □ Of course, I can’t recommend you to shoot video. That’s the main advantage of using speeded up a video instead of timelapse. So, it would be much easier for beginner to shoot video and then speed up that to get the speed that he want. It’s a common problem, you can read tutorials and table on the internet with an example intervals, but you are the one who should choose the interval, not some stranger □ That comes with experience, you can’t learn that from an article. Lots of beginning timelapsers have issues with setting the interval between shots. That’s so popular issue for beginners or people not involved with timelapse I decided to make w hole post on this subject: Timelapse vs. Here we’ll take a closer look at the differences. I mentioned earlier, that you can get the same result using speeded up video, and that’s kind of true. There are a few things in setting up a timelapse shot that could be difficult. I’ll show you that in the next paragraphs □ So, maybe it’ll be better to just use the photo mode in your camera? □ If you shoot one picture every second, and combine them to play at 24 pictures per second, the result would be the same speed video, but you get lots of advantages. That means, if you shoot video, you captured 23 useless frames every second because you’re using just one from the 24. What if you want to speed up your clip even more? Let’s assume that you want to speed up your clip 24 times (2400% speed) – that gives us effects of ‘only’ 1 frame captured every second. You can do timelapse without that knowledge, but it’s important to really understand what you are doing □ Check out the graphics below to be sure you understand that. This way you don’t record frames you don’t need. You’ll get the same result if you record your footage at 12fps and play the footage at 24fps. Now the software plays every second frame of your footage, but still at 24fps (so 12 frames of every second of the footage was cut out). If you want to, for example, speed up your clip twice, you just put 200% in speed value. To record a standard, “real-time” video, your camera should record 24 frames every second, and it’s played in 24 fps. Let’s consider cinema standard – 24 frames per second. It’s not magic, just photographs displayed fast enough to simulate motion – just like a flipbook animation above (I’m not the best drawer, but I did my best )). Let’s translate that – I always explain this technique to the pedestrians, that are curious what I’m doing, that I’m combining photographs into a video, and the result looks like a speeded up video.Įvery film is a set of still images. This section is addressed to beginners, I’ll try to keep it simple □ According to Wikipedia, “time-lapse photography is a technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured is much lower than that used to view the sequence”. If you’re thinking about starting using this technique & do it like a pro, it would be very useful for you □ I call that place a timelapse blog, so it’s a shame not to have a timelapse tutorial □ It’ll be basic, but in-depth tutorial. |
